MORE ABOUT
Dr. Cunningham and the Story of
AMC THE PRACTICE
Dr. Cunningham’s specialized training includes a focus on both infants/young children and adulthood. Dr. Cunningham’s expertise is vast, including trauma, grief/loss (fetal, infant, child, parent), prenatal and postpartum mental health (anxiety, depression), and attachment. Dr. Cunningham has worked in both outpatient and inpatient settings (antepartum, NICU, postpartum unit, general pediatric medicine) in Illinois at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago and in Colorado at University of Colorado Denver (servicing patients/family from CHCO and UCHealth University Hospital). Dr. Cunningham has also conducted research in the areas of trauma and attachment. Dr. Cunningham has presented her research locally, nationally, and internationally. Her work has been published in peer-reviewed journals including Pediatric Research, International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, Journal of Child and Family Studies, Early Education & Development, and Clinical Case Studies.
Dr. Cunningham’s inpatient clinical experiences continued to show her how limited and difficult these specialized services were to obtain outside of the hospital setting. She also received continuous feedback from clients stating they were tired of meeting with general therapists that didn’t quite relate or understand medical complexities. To help a broader range of people outside of the walls of the hospital and to provide truly expert care, Dr. Cunningham created AMC The Practice. A specialized remote teletherapy practice dedicated to providing specialized care for individuals and families navigating medical complexities. The decision to provide commit to providing remote treatment was purposeful to remove the additional barriers getting to an office for an appointment creates (transportation, parking, and childcare to name a few).
The letters, “AMC” are an acronym for “a meaningful connection,” as Dr. Cunningham is strongly rooted in attachment and views relationships as a core component of mental health. It is her goal to create truly meaningful connections with the individuals and families she works with and for that connection to serve as a “home-base” for them to return to as different chapters in life call for therapeutic support.
